Swinton is the largest insurance broker operation in the UK and can trace its routes back to late 1950 when the company opened their first branch in the North of England. The company has grown rapidly since those early days through growth, acquisitions, and mergers, and claims to administer over 2 million insurance policies which are serviced by over 3,000 staff.

The company’s main strength has been its willingness to change with the times whilst still offering consumers the choice of walking into one of its many branches up and down the UK, telephoning or getting an insurance quote online. An example of this occurred in the 1980s when under ownership from what is now known as Royal & Sun Alliance, the broker invested heavily in technology by computerising its operation and opening call centres to link to each branch to challenge and compete against the rise of the direct insurers.

In 2006, Swinton who is currently owned by a French insurer MMA took dramatic steps to increase its branch network by purchasing the Budget retail branch network and merging with Its4me plc to further boost its online presence.
