Travel Insurance For
Skiing
You maybe surprised to learn that your existing annual or single trip
travel policy may include insurance cover for skiing, however, check the
policy carefully because
its likely that cover is applicable for a specified total number of days
cover in the year and certain activities such as off piste skiing
are excluded. For
an additional premium some insurers may extend the trip limit that you
may require.
If your existing policy does not cover skiing,
there are plenty of companies who offer specific ski insurance.
What is normally covered?
Apart from medical expenses and repatriation costs arising from
an unexpected skiing accident most policies protect ski equipment
owned by you against
accidental loss, theft or damage to skis, poles, boots and bindings
and other items associated with skiing. Most travel insurance polices are not
old for new. If the ski
equipment is more than a year old deductions maybe made for wear,
tear, and loss of value in the event of any claim. Some insurance policies will
allow you to
hire ski
equipment if your own is lost stolen or delayed after a certain time
period up to specified limits.
Look for travel insurance policies that also cover the costs of unused ski
packs which can consist of ski school fees, skiing instructor fees, hired
equipment such as skis, boots, bindings, snowboards and ice skates and
booked lift passes. These benefits will normally apply if you are unable
to ski following illness or injury.
If the piste you are booked on for skiing is closed as a result of bad weather
or snow problems there are insurance policies which will compensate you either
by paying for the cost of transport to the nearest available resort, or
paying a set benefit for each 24-hour period up to specified limits.
Avalanche cover is usually applicable if your booked outward or return
journey is delayed for a defined time period stated in the policy causing
you to incur additional travel and accommodation expenses.
