Motorcycle Insurance
Guide
What is covered?
The basic minimum level of insurance cover required by the Road Traffic Act for
motorcycles that are used on public roads is third party insurance.
Third party fire and theft, and comprehensive cover are also available.
Most motorcycle insurance
policies include accident and claims assistance help lines as part
of the cover. Depending on the insuring company legal expenses
protection and breakdown recovery may be included in the motorcycle policy, or
offered as
an
optional extra.
Motorcycle insurance is now becoming widely available online and
there are increasing numbers of UK companies and brokers to obtain
quotes from.
If you think you are paying too much for your
motorcycle insurance, or
are looking for ways to reduce premiums, there are some measures
worth considering.
Voluntarily increasing the claims excess amount is often the
viewed as the easy option, however, the cost will be higher should
you
need to
make a claim. Insurers will always look favourably at
motorcycles that
are garaged securely overnight. Consider insurance approved security
systems and
locks to obtain the maximum discount. Your local motorcycle retailer
or
insurance company will advise regarding what is suitable. Assuming
the motorcycle is
used at weekends, or occasionally, you may qualify for limited
mileage discounts dependent upon the estimated annual miles stated
at the
time the motorcycle insurance is taken out. If you can avoid carrying pillion
passengers
it is likely further discounts can be achieved. Finally, if you
own several motorcycles or have passed recognised Advanced Rider
courses
or belong
to affiliated Motorcycle clubs such as the British Motorcyclists
Federation, you be entitled to additional discounts.
