Home Insurance Guide
What Is Covered?
Generally, buildings insurance protects against unexpected events which
may occur to property such as floods, fire, storm damage and subsidence.
Some home insurance companies are prepared to offer accidental damage
for an additional premium. If your home is uninhabitable as a result
of damage triggered by one of the events already mentioned, the costs
of
alternative temporary accommodation maybe offered by the insuring
company.
Contents insurance usually covers possessions in the home such as
televisions, hi-fi and furnishings against fire, theft, storm or
flood. Depending
on the home insurance company you maybe offered additional accidental
damage cover for an extra charge. This applies, for example, if
a liquid such
as wine is split by mistake on your carpet and it has to
be replaced.
Many home insurance companies provide protection for personal possessions
which is normally provided under the contents section of the
policy. Usually there will be a single article limit which applies
and
this can vary according to each insurance policy. If the item is an expensive
engagement
ring for example, this may exceed the single article limit stated
in the home cover
and would need to be insured separately for an additional premium.
If you are shopping around for home insurance look out
for companies who offer new for old cover. This means if
you have
to make a claim to replace an item that is over a year old
for example,
you
may receive a new replacement or the value of the item at today’s
prices if the home insurance claim is successful.
