Home Appliance Insurance Guide

What is a domestic appliance?

As far as insurance companies are concerned domestic appliances are those which are used in the home and consist of washing machines, dishwashers, fridges, freezers or tumble dryers that maybe used in the kitchen. To televisions, hi-fi, DVD players used in the living area to computers, laptops, cameras, vacuum cleaners, lawnmowers and even showers.

What is the scope of insurance cover for home appliances?

This will depend on the insuring company’s policy conditions. Domestic and General who happen to the biggest insurance company in this sector provide cover for both new domestic appliances and those up to 8 years old should they breakdown or you accidentally damage the insured item. If the home appliance can be repaired Domestic and General will cover the cost of parts and labour. In the event that the appliance is uneconomical to repair, and it is less than 5 years old, a replacement will be offered.

As with all types of insurance, terms and conditions apply. In general there is a duty of care to maintain your appliances when necessary. For example, if your washing machine broke down as a result of a lime scale build up caused by your home being in a hard water area and you did not take measures to help prevent this such as using lime scale remover products, it is unlikely you would be covered. Other common exclusions associated with such domestic appliance insurance policies include malicious damage, theft, consequential loss or if the equipment is used for commercial purposes.
