Private Health Insurance Guide
In recent years this type of product has evolved to
offer different levels of healthcare cover to suit most people’s requirements.
Private health insurance is designed primarily to cover the cost of
private medical
treatment in the event of a policyholder suffering acute conditions through
illness or injury. By definition, it is not meant to replace healthcare
provision offered by the National Health Service, hence why Private Hospitals
do not cater for accidents or emergencies.
Most private health insurance companies define acute conditions
as those which can be treated promptly and cured within a short space
of time. Depending
on the type of insurance policy private medical treatment may consist
of specialist consultations, diagnostic tests, outpatient treatments,
surgery, hospital accommodation, doctor’s fees and rehabilitation.
Minor or routine operations such as wisdom tooth extractions or bunions
are fairly typical of the type of medical complaints that fall under
the scope of such private health insurance policies.
In some cases, pre-existing medical conditions are not covered indefinitely
or for a specified period which could be a long as five years.
For many, the advantage of private medical insurance is the reassurance of
knowing that possible (NHS) waiting lists do not apply with regard to
diagnostic tests or operations for new conditions, and that prompt treatment
is available assuming this is authorised by the private health insurance provider.
