Third Party Car Insurance
Under the Road
Traffic Act,
it is a requirement for all UK car owners using public roads or public
places to be insured. The minimum level of cover demanded by the Act
is third party insurance which covers against liability to other people
and property.
There are other extensions of
third party car insurance most notably third
party fire and theft cover. As the name suggests anyone buying this level
of cover is also protecting their car against theft or damage caused
by fire. Unlike comprehensive car insurance, you are not covered for accidental
damage to your vehicle unless a third party admits liability. Even in this
scenario you will still have to pay for repairs to your car following
an accident and claim from the third parties insurance company. Other
limitations of this type of car insurance cover include being unable to drive
other vehicles, although, this may depend on your policy. Most
comprehensive car insurance polices allow the policyholder to drive other vehicles
on a third party basis. All insuring companies generally offer optional
extras to third party car insurance policies such as legal expenses, no claims bonus
protection and uninsured loss recovery.
