Classic Car Insurance

Comprehensive policies sold for classic cars are similar to your everyday car insurance, however, there are some subtle differences and additional policy features applicable to this type of vehicle.

Generally a car is deemed a classic by insurance companies if it was manufactured at least 15 years ago. This interpretation can change according to who you insure the vehicle with. Most insurance companies insist that the car was manufactured as a standard production model, therefore, Q-plate or kit cars, or replicas may not count as a classic car.

Unlike the valuation system applied to modern cars during total loss insurance claims which takes into account annual depreciation and market conditions, classic car owners can opt for comprehensive insurance polices that apply agreed valuations. This means that before the policy is taken out, the actual value of the classic car is agreed in advance between the owner and the insurance company. Therefore, should a total loss claim arise once the classic car policy is live there is no misunderstanding regarding what the value of the vehicle is.

Most classic car owners use their vehicles either at weekends or when the weather is fine, resulting in relatively low mileage. This is beneficial as many providers of classic car insurance offer large discounts for low mileage policies, these can typically range from 1,500 to 7,500 miles, depending on the product the insurer is offering.

Look out for comprehensive classic insurance policies which cover certain activities such as competitions, rallies, and trials organised by classic car clubs. If you are looking to race your vehicle it is unlikely your policy will cover for this circumstance.

Other types of classic car insurance include laid up policies which provide protection for cars that are garaged over long periods of time for restoration purposes.
