Breakdown Insurance
Guide
What is Covered?
This depends according to the breakdown insurance provider. Some companies
will allow you to insure the vehicle or the individual. If you
drive more than one vehicle consider insuring yourself as you will
be covered if you breakdown in any vehicle you drive. Alternatively,
if you own just one vehicle it is often cheaper to insure the vehicle.
Roadside assistance is regarded as the minimum
level of cover offered by most breakdown insurance companies.
If your vehicle has a breakdown
away from the home, your car will be attended to and if can’t
be fixed at the roadside, it may be towed to the nearest available
car garage.
Home start maybe offered as part of roadside
assistance cover and includes cover if your car breaks down at home.
Vehicle recovery to a garage of your choice and repatriation to
a chosen destination following a breakdown usually costs more than
basic roadside assistance. You maybe reassured however, that the
car will be a repaired by a garage you are familiar with.
If you are prepared to pay more for your breakdown insurance,
you will benefit from increased levels of cover such as possible
courtesy car hire, overnight accommodation and onward travel expenses.
European Breakdown Insurance usually costs the most and usually
incorporates roadside assistance, recovery and repatriation
of the vehicle and occupants to the UK if required.
